Mac won't start up? Don't panic — let's work out why.

A Mac that won't boot is alarming, but it often isn't as bad as it looks. Ring me and we'll work out what's going on, wherever you are in the UK.

A black screen or a Mac stuck on the Apple logo can mean a lot of different things — a software hiccup, a setting that needs resetting, a full disk, or occasionally something more serious. The first job is to find out which, calmly, without guessing. I'll talk you through what to try, step by step, even if you're not sure where the buttons are.

Where a Mac genuinely can't be brought back remotely, I'll tell you plainly and point you to what's worth doing next — including how to protect your files. No false promises, no jargon.

What this usually looks like

  • Stuck on the Apple logo, with or without a progress bar.
  • A plain black or grey screen, but you can hear it running.
  • Nothing at all — no chime, no light, no fan.
  • A question-mark folder, a circle with a line, or an error screen.
  • It starts, then restarts itself in a loop.
  • It powers on but never reaches the desktop.

Common questions

If it won't turn on, how can you help over the phone?
A lot of start-up problems are fixed with key combinations and steps you do on your end while I guide you — no screen-sharing needed until the Mac is back up. I'll tell you exactly which keys to hold and when.
Are my files safe if the Mac won't start?
Usually the files are fine even when the Mac won't boot — the problem is getting macOS to load, not the data itself. Protecting your files is the first thing we think about, not the last.
What if it turns out to be a hardware fault?
If it's something that can't be fixed remotely — a failed drive or a hardware fault — I'll say so honestly and explain your options, including getting your files off it where possible.
Do I pay if you can't fix it?
You only pay for work that's actually done. If it's clear early on that it's not something I can resolve from here, you'll know before anything is charged.

Sound like your Mac? Give me a call.

You speak straight to the person who does the fixing. Anywhere in the UK, over the phone — and you only pay once it's sorted.
